Celebrating Mum...

On Sunday, May 10, 2015, a lot of people in this country was celebrating their mums.  Not this family.  It wasn't that we didn't think Mum was worth celebrating, but rather we didn't want to celebrate Mum on the same day everyone else was celebrating.  Why? Because restaurants, parks, and other places we would go are packed with people.  So, this lovely woman was celebrated the next day - Monday.

Lovely, isn't see? She's my mum and a kick-in-the-bum.  Don't let those grey hairs fool you - there is nothing elderly about this woman.  She may walk a little slower, have bad knees, and serious arthritis but she's still as fiesty and youthful as ever.  She is one of the few who, at her age, has no wrinkles.  While she has laugh lines and a little baggage under her eyes from 35+ years of working the graveyard shift, the age spots have yet to appear and her laugh is as boisterous and lively as ever.

So, Dawn and I decided to take Mum out to lunch at one of her favorite restaurants - Calico Cupboard in LaConner, Washington.

We love the Calico Cupboard because while it's frontage looks to be your typical restaurant with hearty meals of chicken pot pie, steak sandwiches, and thick fries - it has far hipper offers such as fish tacos (salmon or cod), veggie burgers, and homemade crisps.

We typically eat on the back deck - over the water.  It is far more quiet, more private, and offers great views of the river, bald eagles, and fisherfolks coming in with their catch.

However, we sat inside this time.  While the skies were blue and the sun was bright, it was still too chilly out to sit outside.

The inside is a mish-mash of different wooden tables and chairs that do not match.  While the tables sat pretty close together (so you often over-heard the other patrons' conversations) and difficult to maneuver around, it was still light, bright, and comfortable.

Aren't these jar mugs interesting? They served out ice water in these.  Mum loves them so much, she wants to buy some to have lemonade in during the summer.

Mum ordered the fish tacos with salmon.  They were huge and spicy.

Dawn ordered the veggie burger.  Unfortunately, the veggie burger had a difficult time staying together in a patty.  It kept falling apart, so Dawn ended up eating it with a fork after we pealed away the buns.

See what I mean?   However, while it couldn't stay together - Dawn said the veggie patty was tasty and fabulous.

And I had the chicken and black bean quesadilla.  While it was tasty, it had way too many green chillies.  I lived to regret my menu decision, and I probably won't be ordering it again.

Of course, as it is also a bakery - we had to grab a few baked goodies to snack on later in the evening (by the way, this was the view from out table).

Take a good look.  We certainly did.  It took us over 20 minutes to finally decide what we wanted.

The easiest decision for us to make was the cinnamon roll.  The giant cinnamon roll.  It was so big, we had to divide it in thirds.  But it was well worth the purchase.  The frosting wasn't overtly sweet, while the roll was a good mix of cinnamon and bread.  The family has already decided to go back and get another in the near future.

Mum and Dawn chose the raspberry bar and lemon bar.  Mum chose the raspberry bar (on the left) and Dawn the lemon bar (right).  Dawn has a thing with lemon.  Her favorite pie is lemon meringue.  Her favorite cookies is lemon drops.

The lemon bar was light and fluffy.  The crust, however, was a bit on thick and hard.

Mum's raspberry bar was great.  Though it's crust was equally as hard as the lemon bar.

While I bought the toffee bar.  I'm a sucker for toffee.

It isn't something I would recommend.  I shared it with Mum (it was too huge for one person), and we bought felt it tasted more like a chocolate chip cookie bar.  Neither of us could identify the toffee.  It was way too sweet, and I felt like I was going to slip into a diabetic coma if I had ate the entire bar.

All in all, though, it was a good outing and Mum seemed to have fun.  The one disadvantage of celebrating Mum's Day on Monday - Mum now wants it to be Mum's week.  So, tomorrow it is a road trip to visit her sister (a 6 hour, round-trip drive); Wednesday is seeing the new Avengers movie; and, I still don't know about Thursday and Friday.
