Family of Photographers

We are a family of photographers.  We love to take photographs.  I'm pretty sure it is a generations-old interest because I have photographs dating back from shortly after the Civil War.  In the old days, most families had formal photographs taken occasionally simply because of the expense of owning a camera and/or having your photograph taken by a professional.  However, my family seemed to own a camera because there are stacks of casual photos that have been passed down from generation to generation - resting with me.

But my family is a little different... We like take photographs of all sorts - not just people.  And often, when we go for walks, hikes, or just do some general exploring, we have our cameras in hand.  So, when we were out for a walk at the Fragrance Garden, we decided we would each take a photograph of the same subject (daffodils) and see what our individual perspectives look like.  Here are the results...

This is Mum.  She doesn't own a camera.  She owns a Flip and likes to make videos.  So, when it comes to photography - she borrows my camera.

This is her version of the daffodils.

This is Dawn.  She's using her little point and shoot (which she loves - as do I).  Dawn suffers from tremors, so she has a difficult time taking photographs that aren't blurry, so often I'm holding her camera so she just has to push the shutter button.  This time, however, we thought it best she do it all on her own.

She did a fabulous job, didn't she?!?!  When I have a photography gig - whether it be a wedding, family portraits, or senior shots - Dawn often tags along as my assistant.  She's always got her camera in hand in case I need "back up."

This is me.

This is my shot.  I prefer to get low and close when I take photographs.  It's my thing.  I also prefer to shoot at different angles and rarely do a straight-on shot.  However, there was a breeze that was strong and consistent enough to make the daffodil difficult to shoot.  This was my best angle.

How about you? What do you like to photograph? Do you prefer to be the shoot or subject?

  2. I like the different perspectives. Yours is my favourite, I'm trying to use the ideas I pick up from you and other good photographers to change up and improve my photos.
