Tennant Lake Wetlands
About 20 minutes north from where I live is Tennant Lake. It is a wetlands full of amazing nooks and crannies, and it is perfect for exploring. My family likes to go out there at least once a month for a walk. And every time, we find something new and exciting.
The wetlands are composed of a series of criss-crossing board walks that allow visitors to explore without trampling through the vegetation or getting stuck in the swampy goo.
At this time of the year, the giant leaves of the water lilies begin to surface - sitting on the water and providing little landing spots for insects, birds, and amphibians.
At the entrance of the wetlands is a tower. After climbing several flights of stairs, you step out onto a balcony that overlooks Tennant Lake and a good portion of the grassy wetlands.
At the beginning of the path, just passed the tower is a grassy meadow filled with tall pussy willows, chirping birds, and the occasional heron. But don't even think about stepping into the grass or you'll find your shoes full of swampy water.
The water is so reflective it looks more like mercury than water.
Birds are everywhere, and they don't hesitate to entertain every visitor with amazing songs.
And there are plenty of forks in the path, each leading to a different adventure.
The wooden boardwalks zigzag and not only create a fun pattern on the water but make great fun for walkers.
And there were plenty of green shoots to show spring has sprung and soon we'll be seeing all sorts of color.
And as we head back out of the wetlands, the sight of the tower beckons toward our waiting vehicle.
But before we leave, there is always a bird to sing us a good-bye song. But I have a feeling this little guy knows we'll be back soon.
